Counterpane's academic program relies on mixed ages, an interdisciplinary curriculum, and a fully integrated arts program. The student body is divided into three communities: Primary Montessori (3 to 6 years); Lower School (6 to 12 years); and Upper School (12 to 18 years). This format removes boundaries and ensures that each student will develop intellectually and emotionally at his or her own rate.
In the Primary Montessori community of 3 to 6 year olds, the 3 and 4 year old children are in class from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, Monday through Friday. The 5 and 6 year olds are in class from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Counterpane is, by choice, a school and not a daycare; therefore, the 3 and 4 year olds must be picked up promptly at 12:00 noon (see academic program page 7). Counterpane adheres to the AMI Montessori curriculum, the 3 hour uninterrupted morning work cycle, as well as a 2 hour afternoon work cycle for the 5 and 6 year olds. The classroom is bright and sunny with an extended garden area. Music, French, art, outdoor play, and flower gardening are an integral part of the Primary child's experience. Focus on work and the sense of independence abound. Ideally, a child begins a Primary Montessori program at 3 years of age. These children are generally reading between 4 to 5 years. [->]
